FAQs

Do you collect Normal Source Plasma?

No, at this time we do not collect normal source plasma. However, we do collect normal source whole blood on a regular basis.

What is plasmapheresis?

Plasmapheresis is the process by which plasma, the yellowish liquid portion of your blood containing proteins and antibodies, is removed from your body allowing you to donate just part of your blood. The rest of the volume containing red blood cells and platelets are returned to your body. Your body then naturally restores your plasma content within 24 hours.

Is it safe to donate?

Using a sterile, disposable collection system, plasmapheresis is a very safe procedure with minimal or no side effects. PPA’s dedicated staff of healthcare professionals will ensure your visit is comfortable. Patients often relax, watch TV, or listen to music during the donation process.

How much plasma do I donate?

The amount of plasma collected will depend on your body weight and will not exceed 880 ml. The weight categories are as follows:  If you weigh 110-149lbs you donate 690 milliliters of plasma.  If you weigh 150-174lbs you donate 825 milliliters of plasma. If you weigh 175lbs or above, you donate 690 milliliters of plasma.

How often can I donate?

Since your body naturally restores your plasma relatively quickly, you may donate plasma up to two times per seven-day period, with at least one full day between donations. For whole blood donations for research purposes, there is a standard waiting period of 56 days between donations.

How long does it take?

You can anticipate visits lasting about an hour. If this is your first visit with us, a complete medical history is required and could take up to two hours total.

How much will I be compensated?

Upon completion of your donation, you will be paid on the spot which typically ranges from $150-$300 depending on the antibody needed. Some antibodies could earn as much as $500 per donation. Be sure to check out our list of qualifying viral infections and chronic illnesses or autoimmune diseases and contact us to find out more. For normal whole blood donations, participants are paid $30 per donation. PPA relies on referrals from our participants to keep a continuous flow of biologic specimens. Ask a PPA Team Member about our referral bonuses.

Will my contact information be released?

No. PPA keeps a strict confidentiality policy that prohibits the release of donor identification and any personal information. Non-identifying, research-related information such as age, gender, ethnicity, and antibody classifications may be submitted to researchers. Your privacy is important to us and our policies are in place to keep you protected.

Where do I go to donate?

Your donation will take place in the comfort of PPA’s state-of-the-art donation center located at 124 Old Gray Station Road, Johnson City, TN 37615. If travel is necessary, all of your expenses will be covered (i.e. mileage driven, flight, hotel, and ground transportation).
